The Northern California Writing Project has a unique opportunity for 4th, 5th and 6th grade teachers throughout our region.  The National Writing Project’s College, Career & Community Writers Program is curriculum designed to answer the contemporary call for respectful argumentative discourse. This program’s resources help teachers and students read critically, explore multiple points of view, and finally take a stand on important issues. Initially developed for middle and high school age students, the curriculum has recently been expanded to include 4th – 6th grade teachers and students. The NCWP Upper Elementary Advanced Institute offers 4th – 6th grade elementary school teachers the unique opportunity to receive 45 hours of professional development designed to assist with the integration of these proven resources within their existing curriculum. Teacher-consultants from the Northern California Writing Project will share reading and writing instructional strategies through a combination of direct instruction, classroom modeling and mentoring to help your students become better readers and writers.  Current literacy practices and research will provide the foundation for elementary school teachers. Special attention will be given to ensure instructional practices align with content-area demands, textbook adoptions and state mandates.  Sessions will focus on engaging students with interesting, relevant readings, understanding and analyzing arguments and points of view, and using mentor texts to support student writers.
